There are places in Uzhhorod that tourist brochures don't shout about. It is in such cozy locations that the city opens up not from the main squares, but from quiet old streets. Here you can feel the real atmosphere, touch the old architecture and catch the unhurried rhythm of life that has been preserved since the times of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
Olbracht Street in Uzhhorod is just one of them. Narrow, calm, with houses that remember the city's eventful history, it leads from the very center right to the foot of the castle hill. A walk along this street is a great way to see a different Uzhhorod - calm, cozy and a little European in mood.
If you are looking for an idea of what to see in Uzhhorod, this route can be one of the most pleasant walks in the city.
The street was created in the second half of the 19th century and was originally called the Basement Row, because here you could always taste the best local wines. On the left, right in the volcanic rock, a network of ancient cellars is carved. Thanks to natural insulation, the ideal temperature for wine here is 11–12 degrees all year round. Later, the street was named after the Czech writer Ivan Olbracht, who lived here, inspired by the beauty and color of Transcarpathia.
Today it remains just as quiet and atmospheric. Only instead of barrels of wine, you will be greeted by elegant houses with elements of ancient architecture, sprawling tree crowns and a sense of peace. Nowadays, Olbrakhta is not just a street, but a cozy corner of Uzhhorod, where the spirit of the old city still sleeps behind the heavy wooden doors of the cellars, and the shadow of the spreading trees falls on the pavement just as it did centuries ago.
You can start the walk from the central part of Uzhhorod, slowly moving towards the old quarters. It is from here that it is convenient to leave the hotel, go to Korzo Street and move towards the castle hill. Olbrakhta Street begins almost imperceptibly, but it is worth turning around and the rhythm of the city immediately changes.
The street begins from a building from 1912. Once there was a Basilian Monastery here - the first high-rise building of interwar Uzhhorod, and today it houses the Physics Faculty of UzhNU. Stop for a moment - from the side of the embankment the building looks especially impressive.
The former mansion of Ivan Olbrakhta has been preserved on the street. At number 21 is the house where a Czech writer who fell in love with Transcarpathia once stayed and lived.
Above the wine cellars, on the steep slope of the castle hill, a laconic building in the constructivist style attracts attention. This is the former villa of Andriy Brody (1895–1946), a famous Transcarpathian politician.
Along the way, you will see beautiful views of the old buildings, and the street itself gradually rises up to the castle hill. This is a wonderful option for a walking tour of Uzhhorod, combining history, architecture and nature.
One of the most interesting locations near Olbracht Street is the botanical garden - a real decoration of Uzhhorod. This is one of the oldest scientific and natural places in the city. Hundreds of species of plants from different parts of the world are collected here, and the territory of the garden looks like a real green oasis.
The botanical garden has collected hundreds of species of flora from all over the world: from fragile magnolias and sakura to the exotic Babylonian willow. The greenhouse presents tropical plants - bananas, mimosa, eucalyptus, 10 species of palm trees and 250 species of cacti, and the rose garden boasts 120 species of roses.
Quiet alleys, exotic trees and cozy corners make the botanical garden an ideal place for a quiet walk.
If there is one place on Olbracht Street that you must visit, it is the cafe-museum “Under the Castle” (locals affectionately call it “Snek”). Founded in 1988, the cafe is located in the historical part of the city near the medieval Uzhhorod Castle.
Conceptually, the institution reflects the Austro-Hungarian and Czechoslovak periods. Tourists often stop here to relax a bit and enjoy the atmosphere of the old city. It is these small stops that make walks through Uzhgorod especially pleasant.
Here you can play an old piano, listen to the sounds of a rare telephone that miraculously still works, and leaf through the yellowed pages of old magazines. And in the evenings, the owner turns on an old projector, and the cafe-museum is enveloped in the magic of films from the last century. Order an oriental coffee or a plate of hot bograch and allow yourself to take your time.
Olbrakhta Street takes you straight to the foot of Zamkova Gora. Just a few minutes of climbing and you will see the mighty walls of one of the oldest castles in Transcarpathia. From the hill, you can enjoy the same panorama of the Uzh River valley, for which it is worth waking up earlier and going for a walk.
Today, the Transcarpathian Museum of Local Lore operates here, where you can learn more about the history of the region, see ancient exhibits, and feel the atmosphere of ancient times.
After a busy walk along Olbracht Street and a climb to the castle, the best thing you can do is return to a space where peace and modern comfort reign.

The city of Uzhhorod is a real treasure trove of medieval architecture, where every ancient building or street tells a unique story about past eras. The historical monuments of Uzhhorod attract millions of tourists every year, offering an unforgettable journey through time and the opportunity to touch the living history of Transcarpathia.
There are faces that do not disappear with time. Marilyn Monroe is one of them. More than 60 years have passed, and her image is still alive: a smile, platinum blonde, sensuality. Andy Warhol gave her eternity in art. And now this iconic image lives in Uzhhorod - in the Emigrand Art Hotel, where each room tells the story of pop art.
There is such a moment in Uzhgorod - when the day gives way to the night, when the sun has already hidden behind the roofs, but the sky is still bright. It is then, one by one, that the street lamps begin to light up. The first lights appear on the embankment, then on the Korzo, near the town hall, on the bridge over the Uzh.
