Uzhgorod Castle

Uzhgorod Castle

The first place a guest of our city should go to in order to feel its spirit and touch the historical past is Uzhgorod Castle. Located in the historical center, it proudly towers over the city, from where a panorama of the entire Uzhgorod opens. It was built at the beginning of the 10th century and, unlike palaces with architectural decorations, Uzhgorod Castle is the embodiment of strength, reliability and inviolability.

The castle was intended for military operations, had to withstand a long siege, local residents often hid in its dungeons during numerous assaults on the city. The building has strong walls, 2.5 to 3 m thick, formidable bastions 10-15 m high, gloomy loopholes and fortifications. Everything was thought out in such a way that even if the enemy broke into the castle courtyard, its defenders had the opportunity to continue their defense, locking themselves in the palace itself.

The castle had a prison and a real torture chamber, in which prisoners and disobedient people were once tortured. Currently, it houses the Transcarpathian Museum of Local Lore, which stores numerous artifacts from different eras.
